Carbonated water: Good or harmful?

What is sparkling water?

Carbonated water is a combination of water and carbon dioxide under pressure. Sodium and other minerals are then added.

Carbonated water is acidic

Carbon dioxide and water react chemically to produce carbonic acid, a weak acid. This causes a burning sensation in the mouth, which can be irritating or pleasant. The pH of carbonated water is 3-4, so it is slightly acidic. However, drinking carbonated water does not make the body more acidic. The kidneys and lungs remove excess carbon dioxide.

Does it affect dental health?

One of the biggest concerns about sparkling water is its effect on teeth, as enamel is directly exposed to acid. There is very little research on this topic, but one study found that carbonated mineral water damages enamel only slightly more than non-carbonated water. In another study, carbonated drinks showed strong potential to destroy enamel - but only if they contained sugar.

In fact, a non-carbonated sweet drink is more harmful than a sugar-free carbonated drink. A review of several studies found that the combination of sugar and carbonation can lead to tooth decay.

However, plain carbonated water seems to pose little risk to dental health. Only types of sugar are harmful.

Does carbonated water affect bone health?

Many people believe that carbonated beverages are harmful to bones because of their high acid content. However, research suggests that there is no risk, at least for carbonated water, as other carbonated beverages studies say have a negative effect on bones.

Does it affect heart health?

Research suggests that carbonated water can improve heart health, although the evidence is very limited.

summary

Studies show that carbonated water is not harmful. If you like it, drink it. But you should be careful to read the ingredients about added sugar or salt./gazeta express
